We Must Sort

Traduire - eng|fr

Sorting household waste contributes to the cleanliness of the planet.

The family is at the table. They’ve just finished lunch. We see empty yogurt, bottles, apple cores and so on.

The actors are: Mom, Dad, Noah, Jade and Tom

Mom: Come on, Noah, it’s your turn to clear the table!

Noah: Oh, I always have to do the chores. Tom will be here soon!

Mom: No Noah, Dad went shopping and went to get you from school. I made some food and  ironed the laundry, Jade, your sister, fed Felix, cleaned his bedding, phoned grandma to see if everything was okay, and you…

Dad: We all share the chores because we all enjoy the comfort of home.

The family gets up and sits on the couch. Noah gets up, gets a big black bag and starts putting everything on the table: bottles, yogurts, fruit peels and so on. He walks by the buffet, grabs a newspaper and dumps it, goes to the kitchen, picks up the trays of vegetables and prepared dishes, then pulls the bag towards the garden

Noah: Mom, I’m done. I’m going to the corner to put the garbage bag in the container, and then I’ll come back. If Tom comes, tell him to wait, please!

Mom: Oh no Noah! How many times I tell you to take the yellow, blue and green bags that I put under the sink..

Noah: No, Mom, I don’t need three bags. Only one was enough for me. Do you want me to put something else in it?

Jade asks nodding her head

Jade: When it’s my turn, I’ll take the blue. I like this color, okay, Dad?

The father says with a broad smile

Dad: We have three colors to sort and put every waste in the bag that’s meant for it

Noah scoffs

Noah: What a waste of time! Why sort when we can do it simply. Tom will arrive soon so that we can watch TV together.

Dad: On the contrary, sorting saves us and those who take care of our waste time

Jade asks quietly

Jade: I still don’t understand why you have to sort?

Mom: Each waste has a destination so that there is not too much accumulated waste until they form a mountain.

Jade: And too much, too much, too much garbage will make a mountain range, and we can ski there when snow falls, right dad?

Dad: Listen, honey, waste is a huge social affair which requires dedication and reflection.

Jade in a joking tone

Jade: I’m kidding daaaaaad !

Noah: Where does that waste go then?

Mom: Come to the garden!

Mom empties the garbage bag and says

Mom:  Note that! there are five types of waste:

       * Biodegradable waste is what you have here Noah; apple cores, vegetable peels and expired salad.

        * Recyclables, is what you see there; the newspaper, the cardboard and the milk bottle.

         * The ultimate.

         * Hazardous for the environment.

         * Inert waste, which does not produce any physical, chemical, or biological reaction.

Noah: And what is the fate of every kind of waste?

Dad: biodegradable waste is compost; besides, you don’t have to put it in the garbage, Noah. You always have to put it in the bin at the bottom of the garden. clear transparent bottles will become bottles; the dyed ones will become polar pullovers; the opaque ones will become watering cans or collection bins; food bricks will become paper towels and gift paper; aluminum trays will become scooters or bicycles; steel boxes will become tools, cars or wagons; glass jars will become glass bottles and jars; newspapers, magazines and magazines will become newspapers and magazines ; cartons will become cartons.

Jade: What is the ultimate waste dad?

Dad: It’s the waste that can’t be processed at the moment, so that’s why they’ve been running off to sites with identification papers so they can find them if they need to.

Noah: And what are the environmentally hazardous wastes?

Dad: We find batteries, paint residue, hair products, industrial waste, etc.

Jade: I know something. Mom puts the newspapers and the boxes in the blue container, glass bottles in the green container, and plastic bottles, steel boxes, aluminum trays, opaque bottles in the yellow container.

Noah: And why all this fuss, better burn it all at once and get rid of it permanently.

Dad: Yes, Noah, there’s waste that you burn to produce energy, which is why you have to sort. It makes it easier for people who are struggling to keep our city clean.

Mom, surprised leans over and picks up batteries

Mom: But what do these batteries do?

Dad: No Noah! we drop off the batteries and the drugs at relay points.

Jade: what an ant work! Everything is studied thoroughly for the development of our city.

Mom: And we have to do more if we want to keep our planet clean.

Tom comes through the back door and surprised to see Noah leaning over the garbage and sorting. He exclaims

Tom: What are you doing?

Noah: I’m a good citizen. I want to respect the rules of sorting.

Tom: In that case, I participate. I’ve always known that there are three types of containers: yellow, blue and green, and a garbage dump in every city to allow families to get rid of what they no longer need like a worn-out couch, a microwave that no longer works, a broken chair, etc.

Mom: Come on, kids! Instead of spending a time in front of the TV, we’ll make garbage cans, color them and put an example of every waste in them. Do you agree, kids?

Noah: Great! We’ll share the tasks. Tom will make a small yellow container, I’ll take care of the green and Jade of the blue since it’s her favorite color. You, mom will help us, and dad will go around the house to collect an example of each kind of waste. Containers must be prepared. The children move forward, pose them in front of them, and the “dad” picks up a piece of garbage randomly each time and hands it to a child to put it in the container that is intended for it.
